20 Thin Sliced Chicken Breast Recipes to Stretch Your Dollar

August 29, 2023 by Trendgredient Leave a Comment

I am always looking for money-saving hacks at the grocery store. As a mom and a food blogger, our grocery bill can get out of hand if I am not too careful. I discovered a way to stretch my dollar in the meat section of my grocery store: thin sliced chicken breasts. In most grocery stores, you can find and purchase a package of chicken breasts that have already been sliced thinly and the best part: they are sold for a fraction of the price of whole chicken breasts! At my grocery store, thinly sliced chicken breasts cost almost a dollar less per pound than whole chicken breasts. So, to help you stretch your dollar at the grocery store, I have compiled a list of 20 thin sliced chicken breast recipes that you should always keep in your back pocket.

Why Use Thin Sliced Chicken Breasts in Recipes?

Thinly sliced chicken breasts offer a compelling choice for many cooks and home chefs, thanks to their unique advantages. Beyond their culinary benefits, these razor-thin cuts provide an opportunity to infuse a sense of delicacy and versatility into dishes. Whether you're aiming for faster cooking times, a more delicate texture, or a canvas for absorbing various flavors, thin slices of chicken breasts cater to those preferences. They can seamlessly blend into a wide range of recipes, allowing for creative interpretations that wouldn't be as easily achievable with thicker cuts. Whether you're crafting elegant rolls, quick stir-fries, or health-conscious salads, the adaptability of thin-sliced chicken breasts empowers home cooks to explore a diverse array of culinary possibilities.

How to Slice Regular Chicken Breasts into Thin Cutlets

When you have a crowd to feed and regular chicken breasts on hand, transforming them into thin cutlets is a practical solution that allows you to stretch your ingredients while maintaining deliciousness.

    1. Gather Your Tools:
      • Chicken breasts (boneless and skinless)
      • Cutting board
      • Sharp chef's knife (chef's knife, boning knife, or fillet knife will work)
      • Plastic wrap or parchment paper
      • Meat mallet or rolling pin (optional)
    2. Prep the Chicken:
      • Place the chicken breasts on a clean cutting board.
    3. Cover with Plastic Wrap:
      • Lay a sheet of plastic wrap or parchment paper over the chicken breasts. This will help prevent chicken juice splatters and keep your workspace clean.
    4. Start Slicing:
      • Hold the knife parallel to the cutting board and gently press it onto the chicken breast's long side. Carefully slice horizontally through the chicken breast, creating two thinner slices.
    5. Use the Meat Mallet (Optional):
      • To achieve an even thickness, place one of the thin chicken slices between two sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper. Use a meat mallet or a rolling pin to gently pound the chicken until it's uniformly thin. Be careful not to tear the meat.
    6. Repeat as Needed:
      • If you need more thin cutlets, repeat the slicing and, if desired, the pounding process with the remaining chicken breasts.
    7. Trim if Necessary:
      • If any uneven or excess parts are left after slicing, you can trim them with your knife for a neater presentation.
    8. Store or Cook:
      • You can use the thin chicken cutlets immediately in your favorite recipes, or if you're prepping in advance, separate them with parchment paper and store them in an airtight container in the refrigerator.

By following these steps, you can easily transform regular chicken breasts into thin cutlets. Or, if you are like me and don't really want to mess with these steps, thinly sliced chicken breasts are likely available at your local grocery store.

Cooking Tips for Thinly Sliced Chicken Breasts

Cooking thinly sliced chicken breasts can be a breeze with the right techniques. Here are the top 5 cooking tips for perfectly cooked thin chicken cutlets:

    Even Thickness is Key:

Ensure that your chicken cutlets are of uniform thickness. You can achieve this by pounding them gently between sheets of plastic wrap or parchment paper using a meat mallet or rolling pin. This ensures even cooking and prevents some parts from overcooking while others remain undercooked.

    Quick Cooking Methods:

Thinly sliced chicken breasts cook rapidly, so opt for quick cooking methods like pan-frying, stir-frying, grilling, or broiling. These methods help seal in juices and keep the chicken tender. Overcooking can result in dry and tough meat.

    High Heat and Preheating:

Preheat your cooking surface, whether it's a skillet or grill, to medium-high or high heat. This allows for a quick sear, sealing in the chicken's juices and creating a flavorful crust. Avoid overcrowding the pan, as it can cause the chicken to steam instead of sear.

    Proper Seasoning:

Season the chicken cutlets generously with your choice of herbs, spices, and marinades. Since thin slices absorb flavors quickly, marinating for even just 15-30 minutes can enhance the taste. Don't forget a pinch of salt and pepper for a well-balanced flavor.

    Use a Meat Thermometer:

To ensure the chicken is cooked to perfection without overdoing it, consider using a meat thermometer. The internal temperature should reach 165°F (74°C) for safe consumption. Since thin slices cook rapidly, check the temperature after a few minutes to avoid overcooking.

By following these cooking tips, you can make the most of thinly sliced chicken breasts and create dishes that are not only quick and convenient but also bursting with flavor and tenderness.

    FAQs

Can I use thin sliced chicken breasts in place of regular chicken breasts in recipes?

Yes, you can substitute thin-sliced chicken breasts for regular ones in many recipes. Just be mindful of the reduced cooking time due to their thinness, so adjust accordingly to prevent overcooking.

How can I prevent thin chicken cutlets from sticking to the pan?

To prevent sticking, make sure your pan is well-preheated and lightly coated with cooking oil or non-stick cooking spray. Also, avoid overcrowding the pan, which can cause the chicken to release moisture and stick.

Should I marinate thin sliced chicken breasts, and for how long?

Marinating thin chicken cutlets for 15-30 minutes can infuse them with flavor, but they absorb marinades quickly due to their thinness. Longer marinating times are generally not necessary unless you're seeking a very intense flavor. Be cautious with acidic marinades, as they can over-tenderize the meat.

Can I grill thin chicken cutlets without drying them out?

Grilling thin chicken cutlets is a great option. To prevent drying, grill over medium-high heat for a short time, usually 2-3 minutes per side, depending on thickness. Basting with marinade or oil can also help retain moisture.

What are some popular seasonings and flavor combinations for thin-sliced chicken breasts?

Thin-sliced chicken is versatile and pairs well with a variety of seasonings and flavor profiles. Some popular options include lemon and herbs, teriyaki and sesame, garlic and parmesan, cajun spices, and classic Italian with tomato sauce and mozzarella.
